My First Impressions of Voddler

Last night on my way to bed I noticed my iPhone vibrate. Not really ready for bed I decided to check it. To my surprise I found an invite to the video streaming service Voddler.

For those of you who don’t know Voddler is a Sweedish company that allows you to freely stream movies. Unlike some other sweeds (read: The Pirate Bay) the guys at Voddler seem to like obeying the law and for that reason Voddler is completely legal. That’s right, Voddler allows you watch all the movies you want for free and you don’t have to worry about going to jail. How awesome is that?

Voddler’s all you can eat mentality and Sweedish orgin has earned it the nickname “Spotify for Movies”. While that nickname makes it seem as if they’re a “me too” startup they really are much more. Voddler has developed some amazing technology that allows them to stream full length feature films without a hiccup.

So what do these srude Sweeds ask for in return for all this movie goodness? Well, first off not all the movies are free. Most newer films and some other premium films require you pay a small fee to rent them. Also, before you start a free movie you’ll have to watch a couple of ads.

Now, Voddler is not without faults. Right now the selection is kind of slim. Don’t fire it up and expect to start streaming “Up” or “The Hangover”. It takes a bit longer for these movies to get released to Voddler then a service like iTunes. Also for some reason they can’t seem to stream a 2 minute ad without having to stop and buffer. Last night I watched “The Hunt For Red October” without so much as a second of buffering but the 3 minutes of ads before the movie took 15 minutes to load and play. That 15 mins of ads was awful. At one point I though thats how watching the movie would be but luckly it wasn’t.

Right now Voddler is a very young service but shows a ton of promise. I am really looking forward to seeing an improved selection and hopefully some less sucky ads. If you do happen to be one of the few to get an invite I highly recommend checking it out.

If you’d like an invite to Voddler be sure to leave a comment and I’ll send them out as I get them.
